Not All Plant Foods Are Equal Analysis found that only healthy fruits, vegetables and grains guarded against heart disease

Not All Plant Foods Are Equal Analysis found that only healthy fruits, vegetables and grains guarded  against heart disease  For years, the mantra has been that eating lots of fruits, vegetables and grains will ward off heart disease, but a new study suggests that choosing the wrong ones may backfire. The study, of over 200,000 U.S. health professionals, found those who ate plenty of healthy plant foods -- such as vegetables, beans and whole grains -- did have a lower risk of heart disease. That was not true, however, if people loaded up on foods that are technically plant-based, but not all that healthy. In fact, diets heavy in pasta, bread, potatoes and sweets appeared just as bad as, if not worse than, diets high in animal products. "Plant-based foods are not all the same," said lead researcher Ambika Satija, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. So it's crucial that people consider the nutritional qu...

Association of Changes in Diet Quality with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality

Association of Changes in Diet Quality with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality BACKGROUND Few studies have evaluated the relationship between changes in diet quality over time and the risk of death. METHODS We used Cox proportional-hazards models to calculate adjusted hazard ratios for total and cause-specific mortality among 47,994 women in the Nurses’ Health Study and 25,745 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study from 1998 through 2010. Changes in diet quality over the preceding 12 years (1986–1998) were assessed with the use of the Alternate Healthy Eating Index–2010 score, the Alternate Mediterranean Diet score, and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet score. RESULTS The pooled hazard ratios for all-cause mortality among participants who had the greatest improvement in diet quality (13 to 33% improvement), as compared with those who had a relatively stable diet quality (0 to 3% improvement), in the 12-year period were the following: 0.91 (95% confidenc...
Make olive oil your No. 1 oil Entree nvironmental Nutrition The olive tree, which dates back at least 6,0 0 years, has long been a symbol of friendship among nations. In fact, the dove with an olive branch is a long-standing icon of peace, and olive branches were awarded to the winners of Olympic Games as a token of victory. For just as many years, the precious oil from olives has been regarded as a health tonic. Now research on the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet  with olive oil holding a key role seems to confirm its status. Benefits of olive oil consumption include prevention of cardiovascular disease and other chronic health problems such as stroke, metabolic syndrome, inflammation and some cancers. An analysis of data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC) study, published in The British Journal of Cancer in 2011, showed a significantly reduced risk of cancer in the Greek population among those who consumed approx...

HEALTHY FOODING REQUIREMENTS

HEALTHY FOODING REQUIREMENTS A  healthy diet   doesn't require a lot of money or newfangled appliances or subsisting on any kind of scheme that sounds like a gimmick. Because it's true what they say about what seems too good to be true: Eating well means listening to that little voice inside that knows what healthy foods generally look like – fresh and recognizable in nature – and what they don't – prepackaged and processed. That sensibility may not fit so well with our on-demand culture, where we want results now – be it dinner or weight loss. But if you want a program that works for the long run, you'll need a lifestyle you can live with and like. That means a diet that's nutritious and delicious, but one that will take a bit of planning and commitment from you. While staying lean is a big part of good health, weight lost doesn't always equal health gained. That new diet that took inches off your waistline could be harming your health if it locks out or ...
